The Witcher 4 Will Go Beyond RPG, Says Game Director Sebastian Kalemba

The release of The Witcher 4 is still a couple of nice years away, but the game's developers are already shedding some light on the mysteries of the highly anticipated project.

Now that the development of Cyberpunk 2077 has ended (although announcements of upcoming patches seem to suggest otherwise), CD Projekt RED is shifting its attention to other projects. And while there are several of them, the priority is considered to be The Witcher 4, the work on which involves a team of nearly 400 people at this point. This is hardly surprising, given the latest interview given by the game's director, Sebastian Kalemba.

In an interview with the editors of the Italian website Lega Nerd (via Wccftech), the developer revealed that in the case of Project Polaris - because that is the codename of the fourth installment of the series - CD Projekt RED will try to "push the boundaries" and "build something that will surpass The Witcher 3" in terms of story intensity and gameplay.

"Our goal is to push the boundaries. We want to go beyond them. We want to try to do something new compared to what role-playing games currently offer, especially since we are working in this genre and targeting RPG fans. As you can guess, I can't reveal too much, but the idea is to create something that is better than The Witcher 3, will tell a more intense story and offer more intense gameplay."

Kalemba added that The Witcher 4 is designed to satisfy not only long-time fans of the series, but also to attract fresh blood.

"We want to continue the direction we've taken, but we don't want to make the same game. There are certain elements of lore that must be preserved. After all, it's the same universe (...). Therefore, we must follow the established path and innovate. At the same time, it is clear that we have to try to please new audiences. The Witcher 4 will be released only a few years from now, it will be a long time since the previous part, so we can't target the game only to the audience that knows and likes the saga. We need to build a new community."

At this point, Kalemba said words that may or may not suggest who will be the story focus of The Witcher 4.

"That being said, I think it will be an excellent starting point for many players, while not forgetting long-time fans who still want to stay up to date with Geralt's adventures," he explained.

Unfortunately, the creator did not reveal any details. Thus, we are still not 100% sure who will be the central character of the story, which, let's recall, will be divided over three consecutive games. The graphic promoting the game shows a medallion of the Witcher school of lynx, which, according to some fans, may suggest that the main character will not be Geralt. To be sure, we have sent a question to CD Projekt RED on this matter. We will update the news as soon as we receive a reply.
